- 6 cups fresh tart apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and sliced
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 2 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
- 2 tbsp lemon juice
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup cold unsalted butter, cubed (for the crust)
- 5–7 tbsp ice water (for the crust)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C). In a bowl, toss sliced apples with lemon juice, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt; set aside.
- For the crust, mix flour and salt in a bowl. Cut in cold butter until crumbly. Gradually add ice water until dough forms. Roll out half for the bottom crust.
- Fill the bottom crust with the apple mixture and dot with butter. Roll out the second half for the top crust or create a lattice pattern.
- Seal edges by pinching or using a fork. Bake for 45-50 minutes until golden brown and bubbling. Allow to cool slightly before serving.
