  • 1 inch Ginger, minced
  • 1 cup Tomatoes, chopped (fresh or canned)
  • 2 tsp Cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp Turmeric powder
  • 2 tsp Coriander powder
  • 3 tbsp Oil or Ghee
  • Salt to taste
  • Fresh Cilantro for garnish

Instructions

  1. Rinse Whole Masoor Dal thoroughly under cold water until it runs clear.
  2. Heat oil or ghee in a large pot over medium heat. Sauté diced onion until golden brown (about 5-7 minutes).
  3. Add minced garlic and ginger; sauté for an additional 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
  4. Stir in chopped tomatoes along with cumin, turmeric, and coriander; cook for about 5 minutes until the mixture is fragrant.
  5. Add rinsed dal and enough water to cover (approximately 4 cups). Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to simmer.
  6. Cook uncovered for 30-35 minutes until tender but not mushy, stirring occasionally.
