Instructions
- Heat the whole milk in a medium saucepan over medium heat until steam rises; do not boil.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the egg yolks and sugar until pale and slightly thickened.
- Stir in the vanilla extract into the egg mixture.
- Gradually pour the warm milk into the egg mixture while whisking continuously to prevent scrambling.
- Return the combined mixture to low heat, stirring constantly until thickened enough to coat the back of a spoon (about 5-7 minutes).
